I imagine I’m not the only parent trying to hold onto my sanity with schools closing, and social distancing being encouraged. Whilst I intend to ensure Emma keeps up with her studies over the next couple of weeks, I also want this to be an enjoyable time for us all. I’ve compiled a list of things you can do at home to keep the kids busy, and to have some fun!
- Make play dough – here is one recipe, but there’s loads on Google. Alternatively, you can play with any that you have at home already.
- Baking – now is a great time to whip up a batch of cookies, brownies, or whatever you fancy!
- Grow sugar crystals – this is the step-by-step we used.
- Get the kids out on their scooters and/or bikes.
- Go for a walk – choose somewhere quiet, and enjoy some fresh air whilst the kids burn off some energy.
- Go to the playground – again opt for somewhere quiet (although I know some places are now advising against this).
- Bubbles.
- Do a scavenger hunt – there’s loads of different ones on Google so you don’t have to worry about making one up yourself, just find one that’ll work for you, and print it off!
- Kids yoga, or other exercises at home – Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube is great.
- Make slime – there’s lots of recipes online, you can also use liquid glue and activator.
- Activity books – the girls each have some different work books that we got on Amazon. They’re great for learning and keeping them busy.
- All the crafts – coloring, painting, sticking, cutting.
- Build a fort.
- Water play – my girls both love playing with water whether it’s in a bucket, the sink, or the bath, it keeps them amused for hours.
- Make an obstacle course at home.
- Have a picnic – either inside or outside. My girls love an “at home picnic” (eating lunch on the floor of our living room).
- Stickers.
- Teach your kids to cook – where possible get them involved with making dinner.
- Make a hopscotch – masking tape a hopscotch on a floor in your home, or outside!
- Have a dance party.
- Chalk – get the kids out on the drive, path, or back patio and let them get creative.
- Board games.
- Websites/apps – there’s lots of fun and educational websites, and apps to keep kids busy. Aubrey loves the Peppa Pig app, and Funbrain is a great website for older children.
- Play – get out the Lego, barbies, trains, or whatever your children enjoy, and play together.
- Watch a movie – snuggle up on the couch with some snacks and watch a movie together.
Most importantly, try not to stress too much. Your child/children will learn a whole lot from playing, observing you, and your day-to day-activities. Enjoy this time with your children, and don’t add unnecessary stress and worry to your plate.
